C.P. Cavafy: The Collected Poems — A New Translation (Arkadia Publications, 2025) features

fortyfive black and white photographs created by Christos Damianos in dialogue with Cavafy’s

poetry and its English translation. Rooted in personal and cultural memory, the images evoke

the atmospheres of Greek identity, presence, and continuity through a reflective monochrome

language that mirrors Cavafy’s sensibility.

Although conceived for the publication, selected works from the fortyfive photographs have

also been exhibited in two independent venues in 2025: Today We Slay – Inner Circle

exhibition at the King Heritage & Cultural Centre (2025) and Gallery 1313 (Toronto). Their

inclusion responded to the thematic relevance of the works, particularly their engagement with

identity, sensuality, and LGBTQ+ experience, central to both Cavafy’s poetry and the curatorial

focus of Today We Slay.

Damianos’s practice blends abstraction and figuration to explore perception, memory, and the

subtle traces of human presence. His connection to Cavafy—cultural, personal, and

artistic—infuses the series with a quiet dialogue between word and image, offering viewers a

contemporary lens through which to encounter the emotional and historical depth of Cavafy’s

world.
